Anne Pyne Cowley
Anne Pyne Cowley (1938- ) earned master’s and doctoral degrees in astronomy from the University of Michigan. She worked as a research associate at the University of Chicago, then returned to Michigan with her husband, who was also an astronomer. Charles Cowley received a faculty appointment while Anne found a job as a research associate. In 1969, the Astronomy Department adopted an anti-nepotism policy that, in effect, barred Anne and a few other faculty spouses from being hired as faculty members. After the HEW investigation, Cowley filed a grievance complaint over that department’s refusal to give her a regular appointment and pay her an appropriate salary. Her complaint was ultimately rejected. A law professor who had sat on the Complaint Appeals Committee later wrote University President Robben Fleming , “. . . it seemed quite clear that Dr. Cowley had been badly dealt with by the Department.” Click here for Cowley's memories.
